Review: Tales of Zestiria (PS4)

A new Tales of game. Things start out innocent enough and develop into an extremely serious tone.

Looking great. There are no camera issues but rather effect overload. When a lot is going on its sometimes difficult to track your or an enemy on screen. Apart from that the world and the battles are good. Some boss battles even outstanding.

The soundtrack is very good. (The prequel Tales of Berseria is even better.)

It follows the well known mechanics for Tales of games. The item upgrade mechanic however is not very nice and if you want to be serious about it for additional play troughs it requires serious work. The upgrades are also partially random which can make it difficult to get the traits you need unless you farm for specific ones to use for upgrading. This was necessary for me for the final boss. It was impossible to beat him without it. The final dungeon is dragging things a bit longer than necessary when the end is near.

Some battles can be challenging even with a party at good levels but nothing felt unfair to me except the final battle which requires a lot extra work, grind and special item usage to make it.

The story is good, well told and enjoyable. Character development is very good. The bad ending is not worth the work and is also not easy to understand. The problem is the good ending is not easy to understand either because many things are not explained and thus some closure is missing.

Visuals: 4/5
Sound: 4/5
Gameplay: 4/5
Story: 4/5
Overall: 4/5

A well done Tales of games and a recommendation for RPG fans.
