Review: Dragon Quest Heroes (PS4)

Dragon Quest meets hack and slash. Cute design, monsters and characters from multiple game instalments battle to save the world.

It follows the rather cute and cartoon-style of Dragon Quest which works very well and is adding to the fun. The level design is very simple and nothing special. There are are no surprises from the design point.

The sound is very good. From the battle effects, the sound effects of monsters and the music. Especially the music got many well known pieces from the Dragon Quest franchise and it lifts up the game very nicely. Unfortunately some sound effects and music pieces played in some levels get very old fast and annoying too.

Controls are easy and making use of your monster army is very simple. Some levels however are not very forgiving and two boss fights are pretty boring with repetitive mechanics you have to repeat multiple times before you can be victorious. All in all good fun but the lack of any multiplayer (thinking co-op) is a major bummer too.

Nice and well told but completely predictive. There are no major surprises during the story and what will happen at the end was also very clear to see from early on. Story-wise I expect a bit more for the Dragon Quest franchise especially when you got multiple characters from different games of the series at your disposal.

Visuals: 4/5
Sound: 4/5
Gameplay: 3/5
Story: 3/5
Overall: 3/5

A fun game but it lacks multiplayer, alas. Simple fun and enjoyable. Recommendable but not a must have game.
