Review: Digimon Story Cyber Sleuth (PS4)

A digital private investigator? Digital attacks? Rivalling gangs? Shrimp coffee? All check!

Visually the game is nothing special. Its style is fitting and works very well. The digimon are wonderfully animated and some levels are very interesting. The design is also very well resembling Tokyo and its various districts. Many real landmarks can be easily identified in the game. Combat animations are a bit too easy and could have needed more detail.

Soundtrack is okay but some sound effects are rather annoying. Like the step sounds you make while walking in the digital spaces or the battle announcements.

Simple turn based battles. The fun comes from growing digimon and doing DNA fusions. Only bummer is the way they grow. Sometimes a generation reaches a cap and cannot grow further. Then you need to devolve it and have it grow again to expand its cap. Very annoying for DNA fusions because it doubles the work and means twice as much EXP grind. Luckily you can later get digimon which inherit an EXP boost trait which makes at least pure EXP grind much faster (especially in the right digital space).

The story is where this game shines. A great story with humour and a great ending. There are also quite a few side quests which help to expand your story but most are not essential.

Visuals: 3/5
Sound: 3/5
Gameplay: 4/5
Story: 5/5
Overall: 4/5

The best digimon game to day. Recommended.
